Following up on my complaints of Project X Zone with Sonic not being in, I couldn’t help but wonder why I started seeing comments about Sonic not needing to be in the game for it to be good. That’s already a load of shit considering he needs to be in to at least make a dent in profits, but that’s aside the point. Check out this piece of gold here.

“Developers didn’t go for adding Sonic, because he doesn’t suit the genre of the game. Sonic is not about fighting (apparently, there were few fighting games, but I believe this game will use totally different mechanics than Sonic Battle and others, so you barely can put Sonic here), moreover, even his design wouldn’t fit in here.”

I was originally under the impression that forum administrators were supposed to be intelligent people, but I was sadly mistaken. There are many flaws with this statement.

1. Sonic is a mascot character. Company mascots are designed to be completely malleable to suit different kinds of genres and video games. Sonic is no exception. He’s been in racing games, sports games, had at least one rpg, 2 pinball games, I’m sure he’s had a pachinko game at least once or twice with Hajime’s crappy business. Plus, the edutainment games. Sonic is a mass market character. So anything Sega can do (and in some cases, probably shouldn’t ala ANIME) to draw people toward Sonic, the better. The reason we have a more personal idea about who or what Sonic is supposed to be is a testament of how good he was at being a mass market character, and how important he is to so many people. Nintendo can whore out Mario for all they want, no one will care or buy those games beyond Mario Kart.

Mascot characters are ALWAYS used in several different genres. Even Mega Man had a racing game, and Pac Man was in quite a few puzzle games too. How the fuck is Sonic not suited to an RPG genre when he’s already been featured in one?It might not have been good (I wouldn’t know) but not being high quality does not automatically revoke Sonic’s pass to be featured again in the same genre. Look at All-Stars Racing in comparison to Sonic Drift and Zero Gravity. Sonic failed in certain racing games in the past, but holy shit! What a come back! Boy, where would he be if Sega listened to fans like you?

He’d be losing his damn mind.

2. If Sonic isn’t about fighting, then what is his purpose as a hero? How is he supposed to rise against the six deadly retards? Making peace with them? I don’t think I need to elaborate further on this worthless statement.

3. I don’t think ANYONE who has any knowledge of Project X Zone thought of it as a fighting game. It’s a sequel to NamcoXCapcom for pete’s sake. Speaking of which, if Klonoa’s design was suitable for that game, Sonic is more than fit for this one.

Furthermore, fans who have this strong desire to impose strict standards on Sonic games unless it feels more like a Nintendo game should be completely ignored. See, differing game concepts for a Sonic game is not a terrible thing to have. Giving Sonic a hover board is not the end of the world. Why something like that is less acceptable than Sonic becoming the world’s greatest source of cheese and camping is anyone’s guess.

The only reason they feel justified in attacking different concepts is because of the (sometimes deliberate) poor reception of games like Shadow, Riders, Unleashed, and Black Knight. Appealing to authority is, of course, the coward’s way. Feeding on credentialism to validate your flawed views is  common amongst hardcore gamers who use Meta-critic to win an argument about what game rules or sucks. It’s far too common on the internet, and one of the many reasons why gamers are looked on as pathetic people. We are ruled by external reception and marketing techniques. Sonic’s lack of appeal is understandable in this regard. The industry would love nothing more than to destroy Sega’s main source of revenue if only because of their policies in the 90s being similar to Nintendo’s.

But for the game, people need to stop trying to justify Sonic’s lacking inclusion to complainers with baseless statements such as “not needing to be in”. There was no other reason for Sonic not being in this game other than the fact that Sonic is not popular in Japan and/or SOJ despises him. PXZ was not originally supposed to be localized from what I remember. Harada (Tekken producer) had to beg for it to be localized. But he wasted his time and everyone else’s. It’s not even selling in Japan. In the next 5 days and onward, I can assure you we will be getting forum topics trying to decode the secrets of why PXZ failed in the west. And one of the reasons listed would be “No Sonic”. But the real reason being that tactical RPGs are shit, no matter how flashy or slutty you make them.

This is the real reason people were “excited” for this game.

Also

“I guess SEGA was afraid of adding a secondary Sonic character such as Tails or Knuckles because they weren’t popular enough.”

None of the characters Sega added are popular at all.

Who the fuck are these people and why are they considered important enough to warrant inclusion over Joe Musashi!?

No one is excited about this game except nerds and perverts. I can only see value in God Eater characters and Mega Man X. That is not enough to justify the purchase of this game.
